USP20 (also known as VDU2) can specifically deubiquitinate and stabilize HIF-1α, increasing expression of HIF-1α targeted genes such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). USP20 is also a substrate for the pVHL E3 ligase complex and is ubiquitinated and degraded in a pVHL-dependent manner.
