Tryptophan (IDK® Tryptophan) (dried blood samples) ELISA

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid which cannot be synthesized by humans, and
therefore must be supplied in diet. Trypthophan plays an important role in the synthesis
of serotonin, as it is the only source for synthesizing serotonin (see figure 1).
Serotonin is released from the appendices of a widespread transmitter system with
global modulating effects on different areas of life. The activity of this system depends
not least on the actual tryptophan level.
When tryptophan in plasma decreases, it is not available for serotonin synthesis and
the following melatonin production. As a result, fluctuations of mood, aggression,
sleep and eating disorder, or depression can occur. The symptoms of these diseases
can be eased by administration of tryptophan. However, such a treatment requires
the knowledge of the tryptophan level, which can be determined with this test.
