Tumor protein p73 (P73 alpha) participates in the apoptotic response to DNA damage. P73 isoforms containing the transactivation domain are pro-apoptotic, while isoforms lacking the domain are anti-apoptotic and block the function of p53 and transactivating p73 isoforms. In contrast to p53, p73 alpha is not frequently mutated in cancers.
