Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a cytokine involved in a wide variety of biological functions.

It plays an essential role in the final differentiation of B-cells into immunoglobulin-secreting

cells,1,2 nerve cell differentiation and it stimulates hepatocytes to produce acute-phase

proteins such as C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen and serum amyloid A protein.3,4

IL-6 and IL-3 synergize in vitro to promote the proliferation of multipotent hematopoietic

progenitor cells.5,6 In murine bone marrow cultures, IL-6 shows activities resembling those

of GM-CSF. IL-6 is also a thrombopoietin that induces the maturation of megakaryocytes in vitro

and increases platelet counts in vivo.7,8

IL-6 promotes survival of cholinergic neurons in culture, and some neuronal cell lines can be induced

to differentiate by IL-6.9-11

IL-6 is produced by various types of lymphoid and non-lymphoid cells, such as T cells, B cells,

monocytes, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and several tumor cells.12 It induces growth of T cells

and differentiation of cytotoxic T cells.13 IL-6 acts synergistically with IL-3 to support the

formation of multilineage blast cell colonies in hematopoiesis. It also induces differentiation

of macrophages, megakaryocytes and osteoclasts.14

Preparation:
mIL-6 is a recombinant neuropoietic cytokine produced in E. coli.

M.W.:
21.7 kDa (187 amino acid residues).

Purity:
Greater than 98% as estimated by SDS-PAGE analysis.

Bioassay:
The activity was determined by the dose-dependent stimulation of the proliferation

of IL-6-dependent mouse 7TD1 cells. The ED50 in this assay was found to be > 0.02 ng/ml.

Locus Link ID: 16193 mouse Interleukin-6.
