This enzyme linked immunosorbent assay is for the determination of serum Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), also called Somatomedin-C, is a low molecular weight peptide (7649 da; 70 aa) which promotes cellular mitosis and differentiation in a variety of tissues. The liver is the main source of circulating IGF-1 and its synthesis is regulated by Growth Hormone (GH). Several other tissues produce IGF-1 and these productions are regulated by GH or other modulators.br /
br /
Contrary to the ultradian rhythm of GH secretion, the IGF-1 secretion pattern presents negligible nychthemeral variations. The majority of circulating IGF-1 is bound to plasma IGF binding proteins (IGFBPs), particularly IGFBP-3. Less than 1% IGF-1 is free. Circulating IGFBP-3 is directly correlated with the rate of GH secretion. br /
br /
In humans, serum IGF-1 levels are low during fetal and neonatal life, increase gradually during puberty, peaking at Tanner stages 3-4, and show a decline similar to GH with aging. Average IGF-1 plasma levels are slightly higher in females at each age stage than in males. There is a significant correlation between IGF-1 values and plasma sex steroid concentrations. Sex steroids influence IGF-1 levels via an increase in GH secretion. In addition, IGF-1 levels are dependent on both caloric intake and protein content of the diet./div
