Histamine (Stool) ELISA

Histamine is a biogenic amine that derives from the decarboxylation of
histidine. It is synthesised in mast cells, basophils, platelets, histaminergic
neurons and enterochromaffine cells, where it is stored in vesicles.
After stimulation and release, Histamine acts by binding to its 4 receptors (H1R,
H2R, H3R and H4R) on target cells in various tissues.
It causes smooth muscle cell contraction, vasodilation, increased vascular
permeability and mucous secretion, tachycardia, alterations of blood pressure
and arrhythmias.
In humans, histamine is one of the most important mediators and takes part in
the initial phase of an anaphylactic reaction (“immediate type” allergy).
The quantification of histamine release from basophilic leucocytes in allergies is
also of clinical interest.
