pDetermination of GHB (liquid Ecstasy) in human samples was a challenge until today. Expensive and laborious chromatographic methods did not allow the prompt determination of suspicious samples. The BUuml;HLMANN GHB enzymatic assay will give the toxicology laboratories a quick, easy and cost efficient screening tool to investigate even samples with lower suspicion. br /
br /
Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is an endogenous substance present in the central nervous system. The action of exogenous GHB is known since several decades. Today, the only accepted therapeutic applications of GHB in some European countries are treatment of alcoholism and narcolepsy. Known as Liquid Ecstasy or Liquid X, GHB is nowadays used either as a recreational drug or as a so-called ldquo;date rape drugrdquo;.br /
br /
At low doses, GHB causes euphoria, increases enjoyment of movement and music, libido and sociability. Effects of GHB at higher doses include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, visual disturbances, depressed breathing, amnesia, unconsciousness, and death. The duration of GHB effects lasts from 1.5 to 3 hours or even longer, when consumed in large doses or mixed with alcohol. Although GHB has been banned in most western countries this drug of abuse is still an important substance. The consumption has been shifted to the freely available substance GBL (gamma-butyrolactone) which is a precursor of GHB. In the body GBL is rapidly transformed into GHB which than can be detected by the enzymatic assay. br /
br /
Due to the small size of GHB immunological testing is not possible. Only in specialized laboratories GHB detection and quantification is possible with different chromatographic methods. But these methods are laborious and expensive with the consequence that only samples with highest suspicion are tested. This leads to a continuous underestimation of GHB misuse. Today, BUuml;HLMANN fills this gap with a unique, rapid and easy to run enzymatic test.br /
