Cholesterol is a steroid component featured heavily in cell membranes. It is universally found in animal cells and is readily synthesized de novo from mevalonic acid. It can be used to selectively target drugs and probes towards cell membranes. It also is a key component of lipid nanoparticles, which see growing use in modern drug and vaccine delivery.
